Something I have noticed that seems to unite all Nigerians irrespective of the age, state of origin. Religion, social and economic status is football; everyone seems so united especially when our country Nigeria is on the field.
I recall an incident during the nation’s cup, when Nigeria was to play a quarter finals match with Cameroon, as a true Nigerian I was glued to my TV and in the first few minutes of the game NEPA struck so I had to run to watch the game at another venue. Michael the barbers shop was the nearest options. With a crowd of excited youths all crowded over an old 14 inch TV, I found a spot where I could get a glimpse.
The
match was though and after ninety minutes of ducking blows and kicks as
spectators tried to kick and save an imaginary ball, Nigeria won.
The
crowd was so ecstatic and everyone was like they had won a million
dollars. Then I asked myself what is it in foot ball that makes people
this fulfilled. Why it is that you day could be made or marred by the
performance of your team? Some people even go to the extent of
committing suicide. After all you don’t get paid a single penny if the
team wins or loses. So what then could it be?
As
I turned away into my street away, it dawned on me that these
spectators share the same spirit with their teams, with the same motive
to win, win and win. They are one with their team even if they aren’t
actually on the field they are there in their hearts.
Then
the spirit brought my attention to the heroes of faith described in
Hebrews chapter 11, who did brilliantly but didn’t get to their promise
because God has something for us that would benefit them, for they can’t receive the price at the end of the race till we finish.(Heb 11 39-40).
That
means all the heroes of faith, Moses, Abraham, Samson, David, Samuel
and all the host have their fulfillment in us, and they are watching
cheering at our every righteous move, and sad at every sinful move we
take. Because they share the same spirit with us.
Now there’s a different field called life and the spectators are the heroes of faith and we are the players.
“Therefore
since that we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the
life of faith; let us strip of every weight that holds us down
especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run
with endurance the race that God has set before us………”(Heb 12:1-2).
