I’ve always loved the different art forms available and I am a firm believer in the fact that every good and perfect gift is from God. All the art forms are gifts from God to mankind and the devil has only taken them and perverted them for his own use. He has done such a good job of this that many Christians now completely distance themselves from any art form. By so doing we deny ourselves the chance to minister to others in an engaging way and indeed deny ourselves of the chance to be ministered to in a unique and powerful way.
I believe we need to take back the art forms, sanitize them and again use them for God’s glory and the edification of the saints. Some art forms have had a better chance at a “comeback” than others for instance drama, poetry and music (to a lesser extent) because somehow it is much easier to make a distinction between what is “Christian” and what is not. For instance we can easily tell what Christian drama is and what it’s not. However some other art forms have taken more of a beating on their way back to where they actually belong and chief amongst them is Dance. This is because it is infinitely more difficult to tell what “Christian Dance” is or is not! But when all is said and done I still believe there is a place for dance today in the propagation of the gospel, in the edification of the saints and in the establishment of God’s Kingdom. If our bodies are the temple of God then I see no reason why we cannot use that body and it’s movements to bring glory to the One who owns it!
The real challenge is with the message that is being passed across through the medium of motion and also the need for moderation in all things. I am not saying that all dance is good whatever it is because there are some forms of dance that are straight out of the pits of hell with how suggestive and vulgar they are and many of these are almost beyond redemption! However we must not throw the baby out with the bath water, there is still a role for dance to play in the church today and we only need to strike a delicate balance with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and most importantly don’t let your good be evil spoken of!!
Attached to this article is a video showing one way of using dance in the church today. Be blessed by it.
